Denver Business Journal coverage (July 1, 2011):
ABOUT LEADERSHIP: “I had a boss ask me once: ‘Do you have compliance or do you have commitment from your team?’” saysJan Rutherford, author of the newly released “The Littlest Green Beret: On Self-Reliant Leadership” (Pylon Publishing, 163 pages, $11.99 paperback, $8.99 for electronic version, available at amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com).
“The real secret to leadership is to get people to follow you willingly. You don’t do that without earning a commitment from those you lead. Those principles upon which you gain a commitment are based on trust: Do you understand what motivates your team? Do you care about the people that you have following you?”
Rutherford, chief commercial officer at 3T Systems in Greenwood Village, weighed a whopping 114 pounds when he joined the service at age 17, serving six years with the Green Berets and another three in military intelligence before returning to civilian life at 26.
He’s donating 50 percent of book sale proceeds to the Green Beret Foundation and the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. He’s dedicated the book to the West Point Class of 2012, which includes his son.
