Jan’s Book

Book-Cover1“The Littlest Green Beret” represents a small felt hat, my stature, and all those seemingly insurmountable goals. We all face adversity amidst physical, mental, and emotional challenges, and this book is about becoming self-reliant in terms of creating a powerful future. It can also become your battle plan for addressing life’s challenges and the key to unlocking the leader within you.

Through my own stories of adversity, I will convey how leadership development can occur every day if you’re observant, reflective, and determined. This book provides an overview of practical leadership principles for managing oneself, creating a personal strategy, and effectively engaging others to assist you with your own developmental objectives.

By exploring what effective leaders actually do and how they do it, you will learn the principles of personal effectiveness and how visionary leadership can develop and inspire people to achieve more than they thought they could. Leadership can be an illusion of control, but changing your perspective on everyday experiences can provide inspirational learning opportunities for personal growth and development.

Half the proceeds from the sale of this book will be distributed to the Green Beret Foundation and the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.

As a former U.S. Army Special Forces soldier, and successful business executive, Jan’s presentations are designed to engage a leader’s inherent self-reliance to enhance the focus, resourcefulness and collaboration of their team through new perspectives on courage, humility, discipline, adversity and resiliency.  Rather than offering a set of checklists, a rehash of leadership books, Jan helps leaders apply self-reliant leadership principles through a confluence of Sparta’s discipline, Socrates’ self-awareness, Aristotle’s courage, Emerson’s self-reliance, and Thoreau’s reflective humility.  Jan uses the power of story to provide an overview of self-reliant leadership principles to be a more focused, resourceful, and collaborative leader.

Developing self-reliance allows you, your team, and your organization to become more resourceful, collaborative and focused in your ability to produce meaningful and sustainable results in today’s demanding and ever-changing business environment. Jan provides executive leaders with tools and strategies to:

  • Reinforce the innate courage within teams to nurture resourcefulness, and resiliency.
  • Foster humility so when setbacks occurs, the entire team can collaborate and gain confidence from the experience.
  • Change a team’s trajectory by questioning assumptions and use solitude and the power of introspection to foster a culture of discipline and innovation to provide focus.

Leader Development

Imagine what could be achieved if each member of your team consistently approached challenges with courage and resourcefulness… truly worked collaboratively… were focused on an inspired common purpose?

What heroic aspirations could be realized?

To create a culture of Self-Reliant Leaders we offer:

  • High potential programs designed to develop critical skills for mid-level leaders
  • Custom programs for senior leaders to build and strengthen high performing teams
  • Executive coaching and strategic facilitation for C-Suite leaders managing change and cultural transformation
  • Keynote presentations & twice-yearly expeditions designed for transforming leaders.

At Self Reliant Leadership, LLC, we work with leaders who truly have heroic aspirations, and believe the best way to grow an organization is by developing their people.

  • Heroic = Courage
    • Aspirations = The Right Ambition
      • Believe = Character
        • Grow = Flourish
          • Developing = Resourceful, Collaborative and Focused

We believe people are being over-managed and under-led.  Self Reliant Leadership is a philosophy about embracing adversity, strengthening the leader/teacher role, and hearing the unheard.  It’s about knowing which questions to ask, and having the courage to answer them and act to produce extraordinary results.

We help leaders develop self-reliance to create powerful futures through a confluence of Sparta’s discipline, Socrates’ self-awareness, Aristotle’s courage, Emerson’s self-reliance, and Thoreau’s reflective humility.

Our mission is to unleash the virtues of leaders to inspire and transform multi-generational organizations with a common purpose.  We know people support what they help create.

“Our organization recently hired Jan as a facilitator to help us gain alignment, improve teamwork, and learn ways to handle conflict constructively. Skillfully, compassionately, and with genuine concern for each member of the board, Jan was able to facilitate open communication, trust, and realignment of team values in a very short period of time. The result was a breakthrough for the board.  As board president, I not only value his talent and skills as a facilitator but also appreciate his wisdom as a thoughtful human being.” -Sherrod, Beall, RN, MS, CPNP, Board President, CASBHC

“Jan Rutherford has been a critical part of professional growth, helping me gain fresh perpective into complicated work issues, insight into personalities, and tools that can be applied to a variety of work situations.”  -Jeremy Meyer, Senior Vice President of Operations, Welldyne
